SXSW 2010 with Alternative Apparel

Jakob Dylan at the Alternative Apparel Booth, Austin, TX, SXSW 2010

I don’t even know where to begin about the craziness that is South by Southwest (SXSW). It’s basically a hipster Spring Break, but it’s pretty fun and pretty amazing. I didn’t even get the chance to see ONE band while I was in Austin because I was working so much, but I kind of prefer it that way.

I flew out to Austin with my friends from Alternative Apparel on Wednesday to photograph, assist Jarod Jones (social media director for Alternative Apparel + boyfriend extraordinaire)  and help out with their two organized spaces at SXSW. One of the spots was at a bar called the Ceder Door on 2nd and Brazios and the other was on the other side of i-35 at fourth street (near the Fader tent where apparently someone whipped out a gun one night). Almost all of my time was spend on 4th street which was a space that is used as a recording studio. Daytrotter.com and Best Buy Musical Instruments store were both set up at the horse shack looking space. Bands were set up to come in, record a session for Daytrotter, possibly sit down for an interview with Best Buy, and then come over to us to grab some free goodies, or “swag” as I came to learn it as.

I met some really fun people over there. Everyone from Daytrotter and Wolfgang’s Vault (the company that owns Daytrotter) where pretty awesome. We spent some nights hanging out with Molly Raney’s (PR for Alternative Apparel) buddies who were in town for, of all things, a bachelor party. The first day I met some the cutest, most adorable couple and rad people EVER, Wayne Kramer from the MC5 and his wife. She first came over to look at the clothes, and she was so nice and so friendly. When Wayne was over doing his Best Buy interview, she was dealing with all the contacts and all the legal mumbojumbo. It was very Sharon Osbourne. I overheard her talking about Wayne is one of the only rockers that survived all the drugs and drama, and it was just really cute to hear her talking about him. In his interview, Wayne spoke mainly about his current project, a non-profit organization with Billy Bragg called Jail Guitar Doors, which works to rehabilitate prisoners by teaching them to express their feelings constructively through music. The way they interacted was just incredibly sweet. After his interview, Wayne came over to look at some clothes, and they had no issues with letting me snap a few photos of them during the process.

and of course, i had to ask the lovely couple for a shot

My other favorite meet was the band Metric. Emily Haines was ADORABLE, so friendly, and I even got to play stylist with her. She was wearing this radically AMAZING black shirt with a bunch of holes all cut into it. Totally a look that I’m all about right now. I just gave her some suggestions on what would look cute and grabbed her waist as a faux belt on one of the shirts. On top of being really cool, she gave the camera some really good face. Jimmy Shaw also stopped by, and he was just totally 100% cool.

Our last day was the first time I was able to ran over to our other spot on 2nd street and take some photos. It was pretty crazy over there, just because there was so much going on. We were sat up in the back room along side Carrera sunglasses and Airwalk sneakers, and it was just a really heavy track space. There wasn’t really a whole lot of private, open space for me to set anything up, so I had to default to gorilla shooting. Regardless, I was still about to grab a lot of photos of cool before despite being there for such a short period of time.
